About this piece
A 2016 piece for 'speaking cellist', recorded on video by Craig Hultgren. In her program note the composer reflects on bystander phone videos as documents of current events and on the choice to film rather than act. The source material is the audio of a bystander video of a violent, ultimately fatal arrest: eight excerpts supply the frequencies and dynamic shapes for the piece's eight sections, and fragments of the speech they contain are included in the part. The composer's note calls the music "quietly, powerfully disturbing".
