About this piece
A five-movement piece for solo cello and participating audience, commissioned by the West Helsinki Music Institute for cellist Lauri Angervo and the school's students and premiered by Angervo in June 2018; the movements can be played in any order or separately (about 25 minutes in all). The audience gets an easy task in each: humming an A and then free pitches to form a soft cluster, volunteer 'captains' with vibraslaps signalling when the cellist moves on, a sequence of arm movements, copying the cellist's sounds and gestures, and recording the cellist on their phones and playing it back. The cello part itself is demanding, with noise sounds, very high harmonics, ricochet behind the bridge, playing on the tailpiece, speaking and whistling, and the cellist also handles props such as a whirled plastic tube, newspaper, chewing gum and small metal percussion. The composer offers the score as a free PDF on her website.
