About this piece
The Dreaming Land is a three-movement sonata for cello and piano, commissioned for Musica Viva Australia by Dr Catherine Brown-Watt for the 2019 Australian tour of cellist Natalie Clein and pianist Katya Apekisheva. They premiered it at City Recital Hall, Sydney, on 23 February 2019. The composer's note describes a journey across an imagined landscape suggested by the vastness of the Australian continent. The movements are 'Voices of the Ancients', 'The Chanting Walker…', in which the solo cello portrays a lone traveller over low piano pulses, and 'Ethereal Furies'. The 13-minute score uses some aleatoric notation, including timed, unmetred passages in which the pianist repeats figures freely.
