About this piece
The Veronica is a 12-minute piece for unaccompanied cello, commissioned by Matt Haimovitz for his Overtures to Bach project. In that project six composers each wrote a new work to precede one of Bach's cello suites, and Du Yun's introduces Suite No. 2 in D minor. In her note, she links the suite's mood of mourning to Bach coming home from a long journey to learn that his first wife had died, and to the image of the Veil of Veronica. A Russian Orthodox prayer for the dead (Kontakion, Tone 3) acts as a structural pivot, and the piece ends in the dissonant ganga singing style, which her note associates with Serbian chant. Haimovitz recorded it on Overtures to Bach (Pentatone Oxingale, 2016).
