About this piece
Solo cello piece written for and dedicated to Aurélienne Brauner, who premiered it at the Salle Cortot in Paris on 18 December 2012. The title, "the swell assailing the reefs", comes from Arthur Rimbaud's poem "Le bateau ivre"; in her note the composer says the music is not imitative but keeps the idea of restless, discontinuous motion in a rather dramatic atmosphere. The whole piece grows from a four-note cell that stresses the perfect fourth and minor sixth, with close attention to harmonic colour and the cello's range of timbres.
