About this piece
A solo cello piece of about 11½ minutes, written in 2009–10 in close collaboration with cellist Séverine Ballon, who premiered it at Kings Place, London, in March 2010 and recorded it for the Huddersfield Contemporary Records CD Transference with ELISION. The music stays mostly at the edge of audibility, passing quiet, fragile sounds between registers through lightly and half-pressed fingers, changing bow pressure, multiphonics and many kinds of glissando, set against louder, more percussive passages. The score asks for quarter-tones, a wooden bow mute, a retuned C string, circular bowing, finger percussion and col legno battuto; amplification is optional, suggested for very dry halls.
