About this piece
A four-movement work for unaccompanied cello (1982) that is Mamlok's own reworking of her Polyphony I for solo clarinet (1968), moved down an octave so that the line leaps between clearly separated high and low registers. The movements are titled Pensive, Casual, With Increasing Excitement and Dreamy; the score at times sets bowed notes against pizzicato written on a second staff, and the slow final movement turns on changes of vibrato and dynamics. Cellist Dawn Buckholz gave the first performance in New York in 1983.
