About this piece
A short four-movement suite for four cellos, written in 1957, the year Mamlok finished her master's degree at the Manhattan School of Music, and dated 2008 in her publisher's catalogue; the Berliner Cellharmoniker gave the premiere in Berlin on 7 June 2009. The movements are I. Lament (With intensity), II. Allegro scherzando, III. Adagio espressivo and IV. Vivo misterioso. The first cello part rises into the treble clef, and all four parts share dense, chromatic counterpoint with pizzicato and sharply contrasted dynamics.
