About this piece
One of Mamlok's last works, a piece for cello and piano of about ten and a half minutes, dedicated to cellist Jakob Spahn and pianist Holger Groschopp, who premiered it at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler in Berlin on 20 October 2011. The liner notes to the Bridge recording describe a single multi-sectional span in which a recognisable melody is set within constantly changing rhythms and textures: an introduction, the theme and a variation, an ostinato section, and an inverted ostinato with three more variations. A repeated, barely audible B and a fluttering triplet figure open and close the piece and mark its main divisions.
