About this piece
Two études for unaccompanied cello (1998), about ten minutes in all, dedicated to Michael Langer and drawn from paintings by the Renaissance artist Andrea Mantegna. In the score the first étude is headed 'Maria mit dem schlafenden Kind' (Mantegna's Madonna with the Sleeping Child); the composer's catalogue lists the movements as 'Visage' and 'Painter's Process', the same titles she later used for her orchestral Mantegna Diptych (2000). Much of the writing sets a bowed line on one staff against plucked notes on another, with trills, glissandi, harmonics, sul ponticello and rapid irregular tuplets. The US premiere was at Yellow Barn's portrait concert of her music in July 2013.
