About this piece
A five-minute piece for cello and piano (2002) after Edna St. Vincent Millay's 'Counting-out Rhyme', a word-play poem built on the names and colours of trees. Dedicated to Sigrun Schöller and Thorsten Kuhn, it returns to a 'Semplice' refrain in which the cello plays its melody in artificial harmonics over high, bell-like piano writing, between 'Giocoso', 'Capriccioso' and 'Delicato' episodes full of glissandi, pizzicato, col legno and trills. Raman Ramakrishnan and Rieko Aizawa recorded it for Bridge Records (Arlene Sierra, Vol. 3, 2018), and the composer made a version for cello and celesta in 2025.
