About this piece
A short elegy for unaccompanied cello that Warshauer sketched in Columbia, South Carolina, in the days after the September 11, 2001 attacks; in her note she calls it her way of 'holding each other in our loss'. Marked 'Slow, mournful' and 'freely', it is a single, song-like line that climbs from the low strings into the high treble register and then sinks back to a hushed close in the low register. The composer offers the score (revised 2005) as a free download in return for advance notice of public performances. Versions also exist for other solo instruments and duos and for solo cello with strings or a cello ensemble.
Technical overview
A slow, single-line elegy that ranges from the low strings to sustained notes above the treble staff (around A5-B5) in thumb position, with wide leaps between registers and long slurred phrases. Constant rubato, ritardandi and meter changes (4/4, 3/4, 5/4, 2/4) shape the line; there are no double stops.
