About this piece
The 2002 version of Warshauer's September 11 elegy for solo cello with string ensemble (nine players: 3-2-2-1-1) or string orchestra, and also playable with a six-cello ensemble in an arrangement by Mirel Iancovici. The strings open alone with slow glissandi and then hold quiet, sustained chords around the solo line, which is the same as in the unaccompanied version. In a postscript the composer writes that the accompaniment conveys a sense of space, picturing 'the lone cello voice wandering amidst the ruins'. It lasts about 7 to 9 minutes.
Technical overview
The solo part is the unaccompanied elegy: a slow single line with sustained notes above the treble staff in thumb position, wide leaps, long slurred phrases and constant rubato and meter changes, here coordinated with a sustained string accompaniment and tempo changes led by a conductor.
