About this piece
Koaiá is a two-movement work of about 13 minutes for unaccompanied cello, written in 1995–96 on a commission from Mexico's Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes and dedicated to Ronald Zollman. Dorien de León gave the premiere on 25 May 1998. The piece is a study in timbre: long tones that pass between ponticello and tasto, sweeping arpeggios in harmonics, harmonic trills, very wide vibrato, battuto and circular bowing, and repeated aleatoric arpeggios. The first movement runs straight into the second, which builds through dense, accented multiple stops to a final series of sustained chords.
