About this piece
Cajón (2016) is a solo cello piece of about six and a half minutes that turns the cello into a percussion instrument, after the Peruvian box drum of the title. In her program note the composer explains that she first pictured cello playing alongside a cajón, then decided the cello itself could be the cajón; the music draws on modes and rhythms from Indian and Arabic music. The player strikes different parts of the instrument with both hands and stamps the floor, alongside pizzicato, harmonics and short bowed, folk-like phrases, and the piece grows more intense and virtuosic towards the end. It was written for cellist Joshua DeVries, who first played it at a University of Michigan student composers' concert on 13 April 2016.
