About this piece
pentimento is a short work for cello and electronics, written at the MacDowell residency in 2021 and commissioned by the Primavera Project for cellist Matt Haimovitz. Haimovitz gave the premiere on 18 March 2023 at Palazzo Degas in Naples and recorded it on the album PRIMAVERA IV: the heart (2023). In her program note, the composer says the piece plays on opposites (old and new, calm and agitation, harshness and sweetness), with the cello's line "weaving into and away from the electronics". She links the title, which means traces of earlier work showing through a painting, to the Primavera Project's starting point: Botticelli's La Primavera and Charline von Heyl's reimagining of it.
