Envoûtements VIII is an 18-minute work for eight cellos, the eighth piece in Giraud's ongoing Envoûtements ('spells') cycle, completed in March 2005. The Festival de Beauvais commissioned it for the Octuor de violoncelles de Beauvais, which gave the premiere on 5 October 2005. Its four linked sections (moderate, slow, moderate, fast) are each split again into four contrasting textures, setting stillness against glissandi, rough sound against smooth, and polyphony against block chords. The composer's note says the eight cellos' resources are used to the full.
