About this piece
A two-movement suite for cello and piano written in 2000 and first performed by New York Philharmonic cellist Evangeline Benedetti with the composer at the piano at the Kosciuszko Foundation. The first movement, 'Lullaby Dedicated to an Adult Son', alternates two contrasting ideas built around a rocking lullaby figure. The second, 'Soliloquy', is a set of variations on a reworked Gregorian chant that moves through scherzo and perpetuum-mobile sections to a polyphonic climax in which the cello plays the theme in retrograde inversion against the piano. It runs about 18 minutes.
