About this piece
A four-movement duo for cello and piano, about 14 minutes long, co-commissioned by BBC Radio 3, the Cheltenham Music Festival and the Royal Philharmonic Society. Anastasia Kobekina and Lilit Grigoryan gave the premiere at the Cheltenham Music Festival on 7 July 2019. The composer describes the movements ('attention', 'a prayer for protection', 'transition', 'unification') as four messages from the bees about the state of nature, and the piece opens her series of works about the natural world. She later arranged it for viola and piano as Call of the Bees II, Op. 77b (2020).
