About this piece
A concerto for cello and full orchestra of about 25 minutes, written between 1988 and 1994 for Alexander Baillie and commissioned by the Aldeburgh Foundation. Baillie premiered it with the City of London Sinfonia under Richard Hickox at Snape Maltings on 26 August 1994, and recorded it in 1997 with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra under Martyn Brabbins (NMC D048S). The work uses a twelve-note row freely, and her biographer notes Jewish influences in the string writing. Keal dedicated it to her husband William, who was gravely ill during its composition; it was her last large-scale work, completed when she was in her eighties.
