About this piece
A 13-minute piece for cello and piano commissioned by Eugenia Zukerman for the 2016 Clarion Concerts in Columbia County, New York, and written for cellist Edward Arron and pianist Jeewon Park. In the composer's note, the two instruments do not converse directly but share the same space, like two people crossing a room in opposite directions; the cello often grows out of the piano's resonance while the piano's bell-like tones gradually descend and speed up. The 'axis' of the title is this crossing of textures, which swap roles over the course of the piece. Sustained masses of sound (pedalled piano clusters, cello unisons, tremolos and slides) carry its mood of grief, which ends with a bittersweet cello solo.
