About this piece
A three-movement duo for cello and percussion, about 12 minutes, written in 2012 for the cello-percussion duo New Morse Code (Hannah Collins and Michael Compitello), who premiered it and recorded it on their 2017 album Simplicity Itself (New Focus Recordings). The piece draws on fragments of Virginia Woolf's short story 'The String Quartet'; the movements are 'The Tongue is but a Clapper', 'How—Hush!' and 'Simplicity Itself'. According to the recording's notes, the middle movement sets bursts of wide vibrato and tremolo against cymbal rolls, and in the finale the cellist also sings a lyrical vocal line that weaves around the cello and vibraphone.
