About this piece
A ten-minute work for solo cello and string orchestra, the second in Lacaze's series of pieces for a solo instrument and strings that pay homage to Erik Satie. Each of its three parts takes off from a short text: Satie's own playing direction about preparing 'by serious immobilities', a haiku by Bashō about a gust of wind and resting leaves, and lines by Raymond Queneau about Pluto and the music of the spheres. It was commissioned by the City of Tourcoing and its conservatoire during Lacaze's residency there, and premiered by Valérie Dulac with the Ensemble Orchestral Contemporain and the Orchestre national d'Auvergne under Bruno Mantovani at the Musiques Démesurées festival in Clermont-Ferrand. In the published score excerpt the cello plays freely, independent of the orchestra, while six orchestral parts sustain pitches on bottles.
