About this piece
A solo cello work of about 13 to 15 minutes, written in 2013 for French cellist Charles-Antoine Duflot as part of his prize for winning the 2013 'Ton und Erklärung' cello competition of the Kulturkreis der deutschen Wirtschaft, which commissioned it. It was premiered in Weimar on 18 October 2013. The title ('the body of the strings') plays on the idea that the strings, not only the wooden instrument, have a body. In his CD booklet note Duflot says Mundry approaches the cello like an archaeologist, assigning it archetypal sounds and patterns, so that familiar-sounding structures break open and unfamiliar sounds turn into conventionally beautiful ones. Duflot recorded it for Oehms, and Erik Borgir recorded it in three movements for Kairos.
