About this piece
Maria Newman's Cello Concerto is a single-movement work of about 14 minutes for cello and string orchestra, made of five contrasting sections played without a break and including a solo cadenza. It was commissioned by the Gold Coast Chamber Music Festival and its founder, cellist Andrew Cook. The composer treats the soloist as a chamber-music partner of the strings rather than a dominating virtuoso. She has also made a version for cello and piano, which she describes as a true duo rather than a piano reduction.
