About this piece
Kono-Hana is a single-movement work of about ten minutes for solo cello, commissioned by the Association Française du Violoncelle. It takes its inspiration from the Japanese goddess of the cherry tree. The album booklet for 'Camille Pépin: Chamber Music' notes that the cello writing alludes to Japanese traditional music (shakuhachi flute, shamisen, taiko drums) through particular playing techniques and modal scales, and that dense bariolage and double stops often give the illusion of harmony. Natacha Colmez-Collard recorded it on Pépin's first album (NoMadMusic, 2019).
