About this piece
Gris-brume is a single-movement work of about ten minutes for cello and piano, Pépin's first piece for the combination and part of her chamber series inspired by Jackson Pollock's 'all-over' paintings, here his Number 14. It opens in a misty, Debussy-like texture led by the piano, from which a lyrical cello line emerges; the duo then builds steadily, with swinging dance rhythms and sharp contrasts of articulation and dynamics, to a climactic close. It is dedicated to cellist Yan Levionnois and pianist Guillaume Bellom, who recorded it for NoMadMusic in 2021.
