About this piece

Six Pieces for Solo Cello is a set of very short contrasting miniatures lasting about two minutes in total, written in 2000: Preludio, Intermezzo, Marcia funebre (marked 'tragicomica'), Vivace, Adagio and Allegro. The writing is freely chromatic and atonal, with frequent metre changes, and each piece sets a different mood in only a few bars. The whole set fits on three pages of score.

Technical overview

The cellist reads freely chromatic lines in bass clef across all four strings and changing metres, with a few artificial (false) harmonics in the lower positions. Double stops (mostly thirds, fourths and sixths), quick pizzicato–arco changes and dynamics from ppp to fff also appear.
