About this piece
Dark Radiance is a six-minute piece for unaccompanied cello, written in 2016 on a London Sinfonietta commission and premiered by the ensemble's principal cellist Tim Gill at the Southbank Centre, London, on 31 May 2017. In her program note Richards explains that she took the trumpet's traditional association with light and transferred it to the cello, moving between muted, almost intangible passages and piercing 'shards' at the top of the range. The score controls bow pressure with a three-line staff beneath the music, from a light skating sound in which pitch almost disappears to heavy pressure, and asks for rubato throughout. Ovidiu Marinescu gave the US premiere at Carnegie Hall and recorded it on the Navona album Moto Quarto.
