About this piece
Until a Reservoir No Longer Remains is a twelve-minute duet for two cellos, commissioned by Guy Johnston and Sheku Kanneh-Mason with Arts Council England support; the two cellists toured it in March 2020, ending at the Southbank Centre's Queen Elizabeth Hall. Richards based it on Max Porter's novel Grief Is the Thing with Feathers, in which a crow intervenes in a bereaved family's numbness. Her note describes the piece opening with a hushed, contained 'scream', with the tension between the two cellos compressing the trauma until it breaks loose. Both parts are equally demanding, with high treble-clef writing, constant fp swells, tuplets and shifts between sul ponticello and ordinary bowing.
