About this piece
Ire is an 18-minute concerto for cello with a string ensemble of four violins, two violas, cello and five-string double bass plus percussion, commissioned by Ensemble Resonanz with support from the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation and the Wiener Konzerthaus. Jean-Guihen Queyras gave the premiere with Ensemble Resonanz under Peter Rundel at the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival on 17 November 2012. In her note Saunders calls it the last of three string works, after Still and Fletch, built around a single tiny sound, the trill, which is pushed almost to breaking point in two opposed guises.
