About this piece
Merging Strain is a 14-minute work for unaccompanied cello, commissioned by the Kölner Philharmonie for the 74th Bach Festival of the Neue Bachgesellschaft, where Tanja Tetzlaff premiered it in Cologne on 3 April 1999. It was written for a cycle that paired each of Bach's cello suites with a new piece; Seither writes that she avoided quoting Bach and instead built the music from long, straight lines that now and then split into several voices or different tone colours. Her focus is the bow arm: its floating, gliding motion makes the beginning and shaping of each tone audible, much as in early-music playing. A recording appears on Seither's Wergo portrait CD Equal Ways of Difference (2015).
