About this piece
An eight-minute piece for cello and pre-recorded electronic sound, commissioned by Yutaka Fujishima and the Xebec Hall and premiered by Ryoichi Fujimori in Mito, Japan, on 10 November 1996. Tanaka's note says she set out to carry the sensual love poetry of the Song of Solomon into the combined sound of cello and computer, and describes the cello writing as "consistently gentle and tender". The cellist plays live against a fixed audio track, which the publisher supplies as a downloadable audio file, so a performance needs a playback system and speakers. The piece is frequently programmed on student and professional recitals.
