About this piece
An 11-and-a-half-minute work for unaccompanied cello, written in 2012-13 in answer to a call for scores and premiered in 2013 by the cellist who issued it. It opens in a free, declamatory style and moves into a fast 12/8 dance section. The writing treats the cello partly as a percussion and plucked instrument: knocking on the top with the knuckles, pizzicato with the fingernail, strummed chords, and "hard and scratchy" bowing. The composer's note links it to the plucked vihuela and the bowed viola da gamba, and to the particular colour of each of the cello's four strings.
