About this piece
A one-movement cello concerto, here in the composer's version for cello and piano, that traces the events of 11 September 2001 from the sunrise of that day to the sunrise of the next, as a tribute to those who died and a work of healing for those left behind. It was commissioned by cellist Joyce Geeting, who premiered it with pianist Robert Sage at St Martin-in-the-Fields, London, on 18 March 2003. The two played it again at the Seventh American Cello Congress in Tempe, Arizona, in May 2003. The composer's audio excerpts name its sections Predawn, Sunrise, Love Remembered and Prayer. The piano version leaves out the jazz- and blues-based cadenza and the extended "Commerce Awakes" section of the full orchestral version.
