About this piece
A three-movement sonata for cello and piano (2004) about the artists, musicians and writers held by the Nazis at Theresienstadt (Terezín). The composer wrote it after a friend showed her writings from the camp collected by a cousin who survived, and each movement is based on a poem or letter written there. In "Remembrance" (5:30) a harvest wagon meets a cart of the dead. "Letter from Theresienstadt" (11:30) sets a mother's letter to the son she sent to safety in Sweden against the rhythm of a train. "Liberation" (5:20) is framed by the sound of bells. The composer rates it "Advanced, Virtuoso."
