The Moon of Moses is a substantial work for unaccompanied cello, about twenty minutes long, written in 1992 on a commission from the ensemble Double Image and dedicated 'for Jeremy, in memory of Jonathan'. Emma Chamberlain gave the first performance at the Purcell Room, London, and it was also performed at Yakar, a centre for Jewish studies in London. The writing moves between rhapsodic, expressive lines and 'non espressivo' passages that the composer asks to be played in a deliberately deadpan, mechanical way.
