About this piece
Sonaquifer Suite is a four-movement suite (Reverie; Zhigue; Memory's Release; Flowing-turning Dance) for solo cello or solo viola, about thirty minutes long, with movements that can be played separately. It grew from a 2015 commission by cellist Hannah Addario-Berry for her Scordatura project marking the centenary of Kodály's Sonata for Solo Cello, and like the Kodály it uses the tuning A-D-F#-B. In tonal language influenced by Bach and Kodály, it explores the new chords and harmonics that tuning opens up. The score gives both a sounding-pitch line and a fingering line, so cellists can read in either.
