About this piece
Triptychon for cello and piano (1993) is dedicated to Boris Pergamenschikow, who premiered it with pianist Lars Vogt in Mönchengladbach on 2 December 1993. As the title suggests, it is in three linked parts, which the composer calls 'images of different states of mind'; it opens with a long unaccompanied cello section before the piano enters. Goya's etching The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters shaped the work's atmosphere, but the music does not set out to illustrate it. It lasts about ten minutes.
