About this piece
An 11-minute work for solo cello written for Rohan de Saram, who premiered it on 5 October 1997 at the Musica festival in Strasbourg. The title is Mayan for 'new fire', after the ceremonial fires lit to mark each new 52-year cycle; here it refers to a fresh treatment of rhythmic patterns from the Kandyan drumming of Sri Lanka, where de Saram has his roots. The piece incorporates the Gajaga Vannam (Elephant Vannam), a traditional Kandyan dance form.
