About this piece
Composed in early 1948 for cello and orchestra and dedicated to the composer's nephew, the cellist Carlos Prieto; Imre Hartman gave the premiere on 2 April 1948 at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City with the Orquesta Sinfónica de México under Carlos Chávez. Instead of two separate movements, slow Adagio sections alternate with fugal Allegro moderato sections in one continuous span of about nine minutes. The cello-and-piano version was already in use by 1954, when it was played in a concert devoted to Prieto's chamber music in Mexico City.
