About this piece
A nine-minute, single-movement work commissioned by the BBC for cellist Roman Jabłoński and pianist Krystyna Borucińska, who gave the first broadcast in May 1986 and the first concert performance at the Warsaw Autumn festival that September. Ptaszyńska finished the score on 28 January 1986, the day the space shuttle Challenger was destroyed, and dedicated it to the seven astronauts who died. The title and dreamlike mood come from the symbolist paintings of Odilon Redon. In her note, a broad Largo theme in the cello leads to a Vivo, con anima section that builds to a climax in the highest registers of both instruments, after which the Largo returns and fades almost to silence.
