About this piece
The Reserved, The Reticent is a 10-minute single-movement piece for unaccompanied cello. Snider wrote it in 2004, her first year of graduate study at Yale, for the cellist Hrant Parsamian, who commissioned it and gave the premiere at Yale in April 2004. The title and mood come from John Ashbery's poem 'As One Put Drunk Into the Packet-Boat'. Snider calls it a lyrical, ruminative narrative. Reviews describe furious, rhapsodic passages, a quieter middle section that passes the melody between pizzicato and bowed playing, and a return of the opening double-stop at the close.
