Antiphony is an eight-minute piece for unaccompanied cello from 2000, dedicated 'To José'. According to Cayambis Music Press, Jessica Catron premiered it that year at the California Institute of the Arts. The title refers to the medieval call-and-response form, and the piece sets contrasting materials against each other. Its texture has two layers: the notes the cellist plays, and a background built from those notes' shifting resonances. The piece sounds improvisatory, but everything is written out.
