About this piece
Après l'abîme is a 13-minute atonal work for cello and piano, written in Paris in 1998, in two movements and a coda. In her note for the Boileau edition, Vilallonga explains that she gave it a French title because it was written in Paris, and that the title reflects its introspective but not lightless character. She describes the cello and piano sometimes conversing, sometimes with the cello floating above the piano, and sometimes acting together like elements of a painting. The piece develops its motifs and explores the timbres of both instruments.
