About this piece
Rhapsody (2022) is a single-movement work of about 11 minutes for cello and chamber orchestra (double winds, two horns, one trumpet and strings). It moves through a series of contrasting sections without repeating any of them. In her program note Wallace says she built each section around a question about which emotion to show and how it changes the soloist's relationship to the orchestra, and that she quotes the first piece she ever wrote. Cellist Dan Ketter played the piano-reduction version in February 2022 and gave the orchestral premiere with the Springfield (Missouri) Symphony Orchestra on 14 January 2023.
