About this piece

Of Cliffs and Sacred Spaces (2023) is a four-movement duet for two cellos, about 10 minutes long, inspired by the Vedauwoo rock formations in eastern Wyoming. Cellists Beth Vanderborgh and Amy Frost Baumgarten commissioned it, and it was premiered in Denver on 8 September 2023. The movements (Looking Up; As a Team – Where Two Can Go; Prayer; Beyond Time and Space) follow a visit to the rocks, and the second has the two players answering each other like a pair of climbers. Walker offers the full score as a free PDF on her website.

Technical overview

Both parts move from low bass clef up to treble-clef passages that reach E5, with simple rhythms. They use tremolo, sul ponticello, rolled pizzicato chords, glissando, finger tremolo and tapping on the body of the cello.
