About this piece
Dream Catcher (2022) is a six-minute solo cello work, dedicated to the Finnish cellist Anssi Karttunen and written in memory of the composer Oliver Knussen. It shares its title and program note with Thomas's 2008 solo violin piece. The title refers to the Native American dream catcher, a web hung so that good dreams pass through and bad ones are caught. In her note Thomas says the precisely notated music should sound like an improvisation the listener happens to overhear. Karttunen gave the first performance on 21 August 2022 at the Creative Dialogue France Workshop.
