About this piece
A four-movement suite for cello and piano (Lixian, Hunan; Lhasa, Tibet; Heilongjiang; Hong Kong), commissioned by Duo Incarnadine and premiered by Leah Plave and Tong Wang in Montreal on 17 September 2023. Each movement portrays a region of China: the first is built on the old folk song 'The Song of the Solar Terms', the second imagines a train journey through the Himalayas to Lhasa, the third pairs a fierce dance of the 'Black Dragon' river with a winter lullaby, and the last depicts Hong Kong's harbour at night. Duo Incarnadine recorded it on their 2024 album Black Sea, Orange Tree.
