About this piece
A four-movement unaccompanied suite of about 14 minutes, commissioned by the cellist and writer Kate Kennedy and the Royal Philharmonic Society. It grew out of Kennedy's book Cello: A Journey Through Silence to Sound, and each movement takes its cue from the story of a particular instrument: the 'Mara' Stradivari, lost in a shipwreck on the River Plate and later rebuilt; a cello in Nottingham turned into a beehive; the lost Gagliano cello of Pál Hermann, a cellist murdered by the Nazis; and the 'Open String' project, which builds new cellos for young players from broken old ones (the last movement evokes the sounds of cello-making). Natalie Clein gave the premiere at Wigmore Hall, London, on 29 September 2024, in a staged event that combined it with Bach's Suite No. 2, spoken word and visuals.
